It was really chilly when I left the office, and by the time I’d walked to the car park, I was shivering, so I switched the heater to max on the drive home.

“Mummy, I flew on a broom today,” Florence gushed as soon as I walked through the door.

“What?”

“It was fun! I went higher than everyone else.”

I was beginning to regret my decision to allow her to attend CASS. I’d assumed she would just be studying magic. Which idiot decided to allow a five-year-old on a broomstick?

“What was the teacher’s name who showed you how to ride on the broomstick?”

“Miss Take. She’s my favourite teacher. Can I have a broomstick to practise on here?”

“No, you can’t. There’ll be no broomstick riding in Middle Tweaking.”

“Aww, not fair!” She stomped off.

“What do you make of that?” I said to Jack.

“I was horrified when she told me. Did you know she’d be doing this kind of thing?”

“Of course I didn’t. I would never have allowed her to go to CASS if I had. I’m not having it, Jack. I’m going over there to have it out with this Miss Take.”

“Do you think that’s really her name or is it another Miss Hope situation?”

“I’ve no idea, but when I get done with her, she’ll realise what a big mistake it was putting my daughter on a broomstick.”

“Before you go, Jill, did you remember to get Mr Ivers’ card and—chocolates?”

“Yeah, I forgot to bring them in from the car.”

“I’ll go and get them while you go to CASS.”

“Okay, I’ll be back by the time you’ve got them, anyway.”

I magicked myself over to the main reception at CASS where I found Mrs Greengage behind the desk.

“Jill Maxwell, as I live and breathe. I haven’t seen you in the longest time. I understand that young daughter of yours is spending some time with us now.”

“Florence, that’s right. In fact, that’s the reason for my visit. I’d like a word with Miss Take.”

“Sorry, dear, who?”

“I may have the name wrong. She takes the children for broomstick riding lessons.”

“Ah, you mean Miss Tait. She only started here a couple of months ago.”

“Could I speak to her, please?”

“Let me just check her timetable.” She tapped away at the computer. “You’re in luck. She has a free period at the moment. She’s probably in the staff room. Shall I give her a call?”

“If it’s okay with you, I’ll just go up there.”

“I don’t see why not.”

“Thanks for your help, Mrs Greengage.”

“My pleasure.”

The staff room was deserted except for the young woman, seated in an armchair, drinking tea, and reading a book.

“Excuse me, are you Miss Tait?”

“I am.” She put down the book and cup and stood up.

“I’m Jill Maxwell. Florence’s mother.”

“What an absolute pleasure to meet you. Is it okay to call you Jill?”

“Err, yeah.”

“My name is Jackie.” She smiled. “I can definitely see the resemblance. Florence has your eyes.”

“Right, anyway, the reason I came over here was to talk to you about the lesson you taught today with Florence.”

“The broomstick riding? Florence was amazing.
